One thing I’ve learned about myself is that when I get an idea in my head, I move quickly. Sometimes too quickly, but I’d like to think that’s part of my charm…?
Anyway, that’s how this idea came about. Actually I think it started when my dear friend Michelle Erfurt, in announcing her pregnancy, wrote about the lack of pregnant music therapy bloggers talking about their journey.
I didn’t have that chance. I started blogging at the end of my second maternity leave (you know, since it makes sense as a brand-new mother of two going back to work to start a major new project…). Furthermore, over the past 3.5 years of my blogging career, I’ve stuck mostly with topics andΒ articles that are professional in nature. I’ve focused on the idea that my role is to inform, advocate, and educate and I’ve kept a more professional tone, with only the occasional “personal” style article.
But I think it may be time to branch out a little.
I am launching a new series on the Maven called Mommy Mondays. Mommy Monday articles will be all about chronicling my journey as a working woman and doctoral student who moonlights as a full-time mommy. They may include useful tips, current challenges, funny stories…in truth I’m not really sure how this content will evolve. But I imagine they’ll be more personal in tone, perhaps shorter, and will be my attempt to make sense of the work-life balance myth as it relates to my own chaotically-wonderful journey.
As a final note for those who caught itβI am very aware of the irony behind my first Mommy Monday post being published on a Tuesday. But here’s the thing…I think one of your biggest assets as a mommy (of the working and staying home varieties) is flexibility and priority shifting. Thus, as I was traveling yesterday after a week-long family visit, my first Mommy Monday post is launched on a Tuesday π

Totally agree that any day can seem like a Monday to a mom. Looking forward to your shares, Kimberly.
I love this idea for a Monday blog! I am a new Mommy and a music therapist in Austin, TX. Oh the irony that I would find your blog a day before I start back to work full time! Perfect timing. Can’t wait to follow along as I’m sure I will relate!
This series could not have come at a better time. I am going to be entering the esteemed ranks of motherhood any day now (which is crazy!), and have been thinking a lot about the idea of balancing work life with home life. I feel like there are aspects of this profession that are ideal for parenting, and then parts that aren’t so much. Anyways, I’m really looking forward to your posts!!
Hi Kimberly!
This blog post came at the perfect time! I am a proud mommy of an 8week old boy… who I just dropped off at daycare this morning for the first time! (I missed him before I was even down the driveway) Today is my first day back to the grind since he entered my world! When I found out I was pregnant… I really wanted to start my own blog to parallel my journey through the birth and development of my child with the birth and journey of my music therapy private practice… kind of my first baby! Somehow i never got around to it! I am really looking forward to reading your posts in this series!
How exciting, Marissa, congratulations! Though maybe a bittersweet congratulations…? Some days are definitely harder than others when it comes to working and leaving your child at daycare. This is a MAJOR transition! Best of luck as you continue on this journey and I am glad that everyone is happy and healthy enough to allow all this to happen. Have fun! ~Kimberly
Thank you, Megan! And congratulations to you!!! I’m excited to be one of several who are beginning to talk more openly about this. I think we all have something to gain from hearing each other’s stories π Good luck! ~Kimberly
How exciting, Danielle! It’s quite a transition juggling from one to the other, but hopefully we can all be a sort of support system for each other. Never hurts to have too much, don’t you think? Thanks for reading! π ~Kimberly
Love that, JoAnn–“any day can seem like a Monday” π ~Kimberly
I love the fact that your first Mommy Monday came on a Tuesday! This series will be fun to read – my little girl is almost 2 and we’re trying to plan having another child someday. Much balancing to be done!
Thanks for “tuning in” Rachelle! This will be different kinds of posts for me–I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes, too π ~Kimberly
