You want to know my primary secret weapon? The one big thing that allows me to be a working mommy?
My husband. He rocks.
Seriously—one of the biggest reasons why I can do what I do is that I have a husband who is supportive of my dream and who is involved with the kids. You’ve probably heard the saying, “behind every successful man is a woman.” Well I think that behind every successful working mommy is a partner. I don’t think we can do it without them.
Here are some of the things my supportive partner has taken on since I went back to school, things I just don’t have time for anymore:
- Takes our daughter to daycare
- Picks up the kids from daycare
- Handles dinner, bedtime, and the morning routine once a week so I can stay in the city to work
- Works on reading with our son
- Does the dishes
- Washes our sheets
- Works on piano with our son (we split this pretty evenly)
- Takes the kids to dance lessons once a week (I join sometimes)
- Takes the kids to church when I need to stay home and work
- Plays with and monitors the kids on the weekend so I can work
Now it’s not perfect. We get tired and fuss at the kids or bicker at each other. I can easily work too hard for too long. And things sometimes slip through the cracks and are forgotten (funny story: the first day this fall he did the morning routine solo, he texts me: Everyone is on the bus, in school, at office. Lunched, brushed, dressed, and not a single tear! Two minutes later, another text: Oops. Forgot to feed one person—me.)
But all in all we are making it work. And his support and commitment to me and our family is a huge part of what makes my life possible right now.
